Mission & Vision

Our mission and vision are simple:

  • Mission – to help create a brighter future for our community
  • Vision – people of all ages are living, working and flourishing in our community

Southwold’s house price to earnings ratio is double that of London. But Southwold’s area has one of the lowest rates of social mobility in the country.

60% of Southwold houses are occupied as second homes – the highest in the country.

Southwold is losing community facilities and employment space, which are being converted to second homes.

High rents and high rates are driving independent businesses out of the town.

Young people are leaving the area because they cannot find meaningful work and housing within their budgets.

SouthGen was created out of a crisis – the closure of our local hospital, and the threat that this historic building would be demolished and redeveloped as luxury housing. At the same time, it looked like our popular library might be forced to close because its lease was coming to an end and a new home couldn’t be found.

SouthGen turned this crisis into an opportunity. It fought a long and hard community campaign and, in partnership with Hastoe Housing Association, bought back the Old Hospital. Now, together, we are re-developing the Old Hospital. Hastoe is building the affordable housing. SouthGen is building the community hub.

SouthGen is about making a difference for everyone – old and young, full and part-time residents, local people and visitors.

SouthGen is creating new businesses, new jobs, new training, new opportunities and new hope for our area.

How will we achieve this?

Southwold and Reydon has some of the highest house prices in the country. Our area has one of the lowest social mobility rates. We are addressing this problem through an innovative partnership with Hastoe Housing Association.

Together, Hastoe and SouthGen will be redeveloping the Old Hospital to bring new life to the area by building affordable homes for young people and families, affordable work space and community space to create.
